Friday August 4, 2023 CBS News 40-mile walk for immigration reform and migrant rights to focus on residency status in Bay Area-wide event Immigration reform and migrant rights advocates are planning to walk more than 40 miles from the North and South Bay to San Francisco beginning this weekend to demand congressional action on a pathway to permanent residency for millions of migrants stuck in legal limbo nationwide.
Dozens of immigrant rights organizations in the Bay Area and elsewhere in Northern California are gearing up for the "All In for Registry" walk starting Saturday at 8 a.m. in Petaluma and San Jose. Participants will walk more than 40 miles over the weekend to meet at the Federal Building in San Francisco on Monday.
The walk aims to press Congress to pass H.R. 1511, also known as the "Registry Bill," which would allow approximately 8 million undocumented people currently living in the U.S. to apply for legal permanent residency.

In January 2021, President Biden proposed an immigration bill he titled The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 which in his view would have established a new immigration system “to responsibly manage and secure our border, keep our families and communities safe, and better manage migration across the Hemisphere.”

The Biden administration has made some noteworthy progress in the area of immigration reform using innovative approaches to getting things done. Its use of humanitarian parole, more reliance on family sponsorships to help immigrants enter the USA, toughening up the rules for dealing with migrants without visas at the northern and southern borders, requiring safe third country asylum clearance before U.S. entries, introducing U.S. immigration pre-clearance offices abroad, using technology to process asylum claimants, and helping countries build up their societies in Latin America have all been new ways in which the Administration has dealt with immigration matters

A bench trial set to begin Thursday will focus on a program rolled out in January that allows tens of thousands of migrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti with willing American sponsors to come to the U.S. legally under an immigration authority known as parole.
The parole program is part of the Biden administration’s carrot-and-stick approach to migration policies, which aims to disincentive migrants from crossing the border without authorization and instead encourage them to take advantage of this newly opened lawful migration pathway.

Thursday, August 31, 2023 CBS News Fast-track deportation program for migrant families off to slow start as border crossings rise "The policy, known as Family Expedited Removal Management, was announced on May 11 as an effort to impose "immigration consequences" on parents who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border unlawfully with their children. It requires the heads of household of certain families to wear an ankle monitor and comply with a nightly home curfew while officials conduct a preliminary review of the family's asylum claim.
Under the Immigration and Customs Enforcement initiative, families who pass what are known as "credible fear" interviews are allowed to stay in the U.S. pending a decision from an immigration judge on the full merits of their asylum claim. Those who fail these interviews are supposed to be deported to their home country within weeks of their arrival, unless they successfully appeal."
